CBD CBG differences: what are the differences and synergies between these cannabinoids?

CBD CBG differences are attracting increasing attention as cannabinoid research continues to evolve. While CBD (cannabidiol) is now widely known, CBG (cannabigerol) remains less familiar to the general public.

What is CBG?

CBG is often referred to as the “precursor cannabinoid.”

At the origin of the process, the hemp plant produces a compound called CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). This compound is then converted into different cannabinoids, including:

  • CBD
  • THC
  • CBC

This process explains why CBG is found only in small quantities in mature plants, usually around 1%, while CBD can reach higher concentrations.

This central position in cannabinoid biosynthesis explains the growing scientific interest in CBG.

CBD and CBG: an essential similarity

They both share one fundamental characteristic:

They are not psychoactive.

Unlike THC, they do not produce euphoric effects and do not impair cognitive function. For that reason, they are being studied for their potential wellbeing effects without altering mental clarity.

Interaction with serotonin: how do they differ 

Some research, including work conducted at the University of Guelph in Canada, has explored how these cannabinoids interact with the 5-HT1A receptor, which plays a role in mood and nausea regulation.

These studies suggest that:

  • CBG may act as an agonist, meaning an activator of the receptor
  • CBD may influence this receptor differently, with a more indirect effect

These differences may help explain why the two cannabinoids can produce complementary effects depending on the situation.

The endocannabinoid system: a key role

To understand how CBD and CBG work differently, it is essential to look at the endocannabinoid system.

This biological system plays a role in regulating many functions, including:

  • pain perception

  • metabolism

It relies mainly on two types of receptors:

  • CB1 (central nervous system)
  • CB2 (immune system)

Despite their differences, they do not oppose each other. They complement one another.

Their combination is often associated with what is called the entourage effect, where several cannabinoids act together to strengthen their effects.

Some research is exploring their combined role in:

  • the regulation of inflammation

  • certain interactions with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus
